Reconciliation Room
Name for the place where the Sacrament of Reconciliation (penance/confession) is celebrated.

Relics
Particles of bone or other personal items related to a saint which are held in a container called a Reliquary. St. James has no Relics under its altar in the larger church, but the altar of the chapel does. The small rectangular cut out in the SJ chapel altar is in the front center of the altar and contains relics under the stone.

[image pending] Reservation Chapel
A special section of the church, ideally separated from the main section in which the tabernacle and the Eucharistic bread is located.

Sacramentary
Traditional title for the book or books containing the prayers, hymns and scriptural readings used during the Mass.

Rosary
A selection of set prayers said while mediating on the lives of Christ and His mother. The prayers are said using 59 stringed beads, also known as a rosary. 54 of the beads are arranged into five groups (decades), each separated by a space and a larger bead. There is also a crucifix and 5 additional beads that lead up to the decades.

Sacrarium
A special sink usually located in the sacristy used for cleansing vessels used at communion. Water used drains directly into the earth, not the sewer. At Saint James the Sacrarium is in the Chapel, and not present in the Church.

[image pending] Sacristy
The room that is used by priests for preparation before Mass and the storage of vestments and liturgical items

Sanctuary Lamp
This candle hangs at the entrance to the Blessed Sacrament Chapel. According to Canon Law 940 this light is required to be kept burning near the tabernacle where the sacrament is reserved. It must be made of wax or oil. Both the chapel and church at Saint James have Sanctuary Lamps because Jesus Our Lord is always present. See picture to the left from church found next to the tabernacle.

Stole
From the Latin word “stolus,” meaning “scarf.” It represents the priest’s God-given authority to carry out the tasks of the priesthood. A long band of silk of the same width as the maniple, but three times its length. It is worn around the neck and crossed on the breast.

Surplice
Garment worn by priest or altar server over a cassock.

Thurible / Censer
A container (vessel) in which incense resins may be burned to produce sweet-smelling smoke. Originally, censers were open bowls in stationary positions. Today, they are usually covered containers suspended by chained. Historically, censers were referred to as a thurible.

Votive Candles
Usually set in small racks in front of altars, statues or shrines to be used by congregation members to light and say prayers.
