Holy Water Font
A container of holy water often found near the entrance of the church that it used by the parish members to bless themselves upon entering and leaving church. At Saint James, the font is also used for Baptisms.


Lectionary
A book containing the Gospels and Scriptures of the Church.

Liturgical Colors
Traditional colors of the outer vestments worn by the presiding priests during Mass, these are, by tradition, white, green, red, violet, and rose. Vestments with gold or silver trim may be used on solemn occasions.

Monstrance
A vessel used to hold a large consecrated host during exposition of Blessed Sacrament. A monstrance is usually in the shape of a large cross on a stand.


Oil of the Catechumens
A special oil blessed by the bishop at the Chrism Mass on Holy Thursday and used during the initiation process of un-baptized adults and at the baptism of infants. All Holy Oils are held in a special locked vault in the right wall of the church.

Oil of the Sick
A special oil blessed by the bishop at the Chrism Mass and used in celebrating the anointing of the sick.

Oil of Sacred Chrism
A special oil blessed by the bishop at the Chrism Mass on Holy Thursday and used during the initiation process of un-baptized adults and at the baptism of infants. It is also used at confirmation and at the ordination of priests, bishops and the consecration of altars.


Pall
This is a square pocket-shaped piece of linen with a cardboard inserted to stiffen it. It is placed over the chalice to prevent dust or other matter from falling into it.


Paschal Candle 
This unique candle is lighted, blessed, inscribed and carried in possession at the beginning of the Easter Vigil. It is also used during Mass and other services throughout the Easter season. Also referred to as the Easter Candle.

Paten
Historical name for the plate on which the Eucharistic bread is placed. Also simply referred to as a plate.


Purificator
Cloth used to wipe the edge of the cup (Chalice) containing the Precious Blood and normally used to dry the cup after use.  It is spread over the chalice at the beginning and end of Mass.


Pulpit
Also known as the Ambo, the pulpit is a stand that holds the book(s) used by the presiding priest, lectors and cantors.


Presidential Chair
An unique chair reserved for use by the presiding priest at a liturgy. During Mass, the presiding priest uses the chair during the introductory rites, the liturgy of the word and the concluding rite.


  

Processional Cross and Candles
This cross is mounted on a pole. A cross bearer, between two candle bearers, leads the formal movement of several people from one location to another. At a typical Mass, procession takes place at the entrance, the Gospel, preparation of the gifts, and the dismissal


Pyx
A small container used to transport the Blessed Sacrament to the sick.
