MUSIC FOR THE MONTH: May

Saint Augustine said that making music is praying twice. At Saint James, there is more than one way to achieve this most worthy objective! Comprised of three choirs plus cantors, the Music Ministry leads worship services with music and song at all weekend Masses (except 7:30 a.m.). By providing inspirational music that reinforces the Gospel message, the choirs invite more prayerful and active participation in the Liturgy.

Praisers is the children’s choir, open to boys and girls in grades 4 through 8, meets on Thursday evenings from 7:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. and sings at the 9:00 a.m. Mass on the first Sunday of the month. Praise and Worship has no set rehearsal schedule. This group sings contemporary sacred music, accompanied by guitar, percussion and piano, once a month at Mass and is open to high school students and adults. The Adult Choir’s repertoire includes traditional hymns and liturgical songs, usually with organ or piano accompaniment. This choir meets on Thursday evenings, from 8:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.

While cantors must be able to read music, anyone who can carry a tune and /or play an instrument is welcome to join a choir.  Male voices are in short supply so these are especially needed. We guarantee that you’ll leave each meeting or performance with a song in your heart as well as on your lips.

The Saint James Music Ministry also entertains the community on occasion, presents a music festival in the spring and a concert of Christmas music before the Midnight Mass on Christmas Eve.

Sing with your voices, and with your hearts, and with all your moral convictions, sing the new songs, not only with your tongue, but with your life.  Saint Augustine
