The Community Soup Kitchen
Putting our Faith to work - Feeding the Hungry with members of St. James
This is a parish wide community involvement campaign with the Community Soup Kitchen of
The Soup Kitchen's mission is to feed the hungry, educate the community on issues
of hunger and homelessness and set an example that people of great diversity can
work together to make a better world.
The Community Soup Kitchen of Morristown feeds from 80 to 225 people,
one third of whom are homeless. The majority are the working poor, elderly
and disabled. It is open 365 days a year. Our parish has agreed to supply,
cook and serve a hot nutritious noontime meal on the 4th Saturday of each
month. Volunteer teams are needed, consisting of 15-20 people, organized with 1 captain, 1 coordinator and 1 purchaser per team who
will have specific duties plus 10-14 persons to supply, cook in advance and
serve the hot meal. The time commitment is for a 4th Saturday of the month
starting at
Most of our teams come from established ministries at St. James who commit to
one (or in some cases, possibly two) Saturday(s) during the year. Families or single volunteers are also welcomed. This is an excellent framework for RENEW groups who are looking for an opportunity to put their faith into practice.
The Soup Kitchen provides very good information about what needs to be supplied -
with menu suggestions and quantity of food. It is very organized and
once we have the volunteer groups established, more detailed information will be
provided to them.
