Extraordinary Ministers of the Eucharist have been assisting the priests and deacons with the distribution of Holy Communion at liturgical services since 1978. They also bring the Eucharist to the sick and homebound within the parish boundaries, as directed by the Pastor. This ministry is open to men and women who are exemplary Catholics, at least 18 years of age, and who have been parishioners of Saint James Church for at least one year. Selected and appointed by the Pastor, Eucharistic Ministers are mandated by the Bishop for a period of two years (renewable). This is the only ministry for which a mandate of the Bishop is required, substantiating the seriousness of this commitment. See Guidelines for Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion with issues relating to the Mass service schedule and the Fellowship Village Schedule.
Taking Holy Communion to the homebound and to residents at Fellowship Village and Sunrise Senior Living is also a rewarding aspect of this ministry, giving both the minister and the communicant the opportunity to share the love and prayers of our parish family. Some ministers have been serving the same people for years and have developed deep friendships. See Guidelines for Pastoral Care of the Sick for Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion.
Candidates are trained after appointment by the Pastor and prior to recommendation for the Bishop’s mandate. At this time, there are approximately 100 men and women serving as Eucharistic Ministers at Saint James. A schedule of assignments for specific Masses on Sundays and on weekdays is published monthly. (See above for current schedules.)
