started at Saint James by six parishioners in 2005 and is now supported by the Bishop as a model for all parishes. One of the oldest movements in the Catholic Church, Cursillo seeks to bring Catholic men and women closer to Christ through a weekend Encounter and to build Catholic Communities for Our Lord in our parishes, work environments and other areas. Cursillo is global in 60 countries, with 276 Diocesan groups in the USA and local in all parishes in the Metuchen Diocese. The Cursillo methodology of Piety, Study and Action (Evangelization) has spawned many other movements including, Marriage Encounter, Emmaus, RENEW, Kiros and Life in The Spirit since its founding in Spain in 1944 by a group of laymen, while they were refining a technique to train pilgrimage leaders. Catholics who want to develop their spirituality are invited to attend an Encounter with Christ weekend at which the Cursillo Methods are taught.
The weekend includes fifteen talks, some given by priests and some by lay people. One emphasis of the weekend is on preparation to take the movement’s methods back into the world, on what is called the “fourth day.” Open to all adults (age 18+), Cursillo small groups gather in Ultreyas and Reunion Groups.
Cursillo Weekends for men and for women are held at the Blue Army Shrine of Our Lady of Fatima in Washington, NJ. (Visit www.wafusa.org) Applications may be downloaded here.
The goal of the Metuchen Cursillo Movement is to enrich your faith in the parish, and regionally across the Metuchen Diocese by networking with other Cursillistas in the 104 participating parishes.
