A charism (from the Greek, charis - grace; the divine influence on the receiver's heart, and its reflection in his or her life) is a power, generally of a spiritual nature, believed to be a freely given gift by the grace of God. Charismata are special
gifts of the Holy Spirit which are bestowed on individuals for the good of others, the needs of the world, and in particular for the building up of the Church.
The Catholic Church has never lacked for charismata, ordinary or extraordinary, to build it up. However, it is the widespread experience of the Holy Spirit’s presence within Catholics and the expression of extraordinary charismata such as prophecy, miracles and healing that characterize the Catholic Charismatic Renewal, which centers on the renewal of individual commitment to Jesus in His Church, through the power of the Holy Spirit.
Many believe that the Charismatic Renewal Movement is a direct result of a prayer by Pope John XXIII at Vatican II: “O Holy Spirit…pour forth the fullness of your gifts… Renew your wonders in this day as by a new Pentecost.”
Pope John Paul II added his voice in 1979, saying, “I am convinced that this movement is a very important component of the entire renewal of the Church…Remain in an attitude of constant and grateful availability for every gift that the Spirit wishes to pour into your hearts”
At Saint James Church, our very own Charismatic Prayer Group offers its members the opportunity to gather to give praise, thanks and love to Jesus. Through worship, praying, and sharing, members become closer to Jesus Christ through the gifts of the Holy Spirit.
The meetings are held in an atmosphere of love and support for one another, growing in the knowledge and love of God.
“Come Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful, and enkindle in them the fire of your love…”
